What Type Of Dog To Get If You Are Allergic To Dogs

Though my site is about natural health care for pets, I found a story in today’s paper about hypoallergenic dogs and wanted to  pass it on. So many people have pet allergies and feel they can not have a pet in their home. I just want people to know there are some breeds of dogs that are easier on allergy sufferers. Our paper ran a story on First-Dog traditions and included a list of hyproallergenic dogs. Apparently Obama promised his daughters after the election they could get a puppy. At the top of the wish list for a puppy is a “Goldendoodle” – a golden retriever-poodle hybrid. Here is the list: of dogs that are good for people with allergies to dogs:

Poodles

Schnauzers

Portuguese water dog

Bichon frise

Soft-coated wheaten terrier

They also included a list of the five types of dogs to avoid if you have allergies to dogs. Here they are:

Cocker spaniels

Irish setters

Dachshunds

Basset hounds

German shepherds

Also included in the article was some trivia on White House Pets:

Martin Van Buren had two tiger cubs until Congress said he should donate them to a zoo.

John Quincy Adams had an alligator and pet silkworms.

Calvin Coolidge had a pygmy hippopotomus called Billy.

Thomas Jefferson had  mockingbirds.

Woodrow Wilson had a ram named Old Ike, who reportedly chewed tobacco.

Theordore Roosevelt kept a bear called Jonathon Edwards; Josiah the badger; dogs Jack and Skip; Eli the blue macaw; emily Spinach the garden snake; ponies Algonquin and General Grant; Tom Quartz the cat; and assorted hamsters and guinea pigs with names such as Bishop Dopane and Father O’Grady.

Nosodes – An Alternative To Conventional Dog Vaccines

Nosodes – Homeopathic Canine Vaccines

If have read the latest research and are uncomfortable giving your pet conventional vaccines you might want to consider nosodes. Nosodes, homeopathic remedies made from diseased tissues or discharges from an infected but unvaccinated and untreated animal. Nosodes can also be used therapeutically (in order to treat a disease) as well as prophylactically (in order to prevent a disease).

Nosodes work in a similar way to regular vaccines. According to Celeste Yarnell, Ph.D. author of Natural Dog Care, “though nosodes do contain a causative organism, their efficacy doesn’t depend on the presence of the organism itself. It is the substances formed by the animals immune system in reponse to invasion by bacteria or viurses that make nosodes effective.”

As with conventional vaccines, nosodes should be adminstered only to healthy animals when used preventatively. When they are given to sick animals (even those with only subtle symptoms such thirst, a red line on the gums, or a dry coat), some may actually exhibit deeper signs of existing illness.

If you are interested in learning more about nosodes consult with a holistic vet.
